Research Paper and Non-fiction

 In the research and non-fiction unit, students will read and discuss Non-fiction text and compose a well-documented research paper using appropriate documentation. Students will create possible topics of research based on their non-fiction reading. Students will then select a relevant and specific topic for research, locate and use a variety of sources for topic research, write a specific thesis statement, evaluate sources and extract relevant information from those sources to support thesis, select and use a system for note-taking, organize information and synthesize information, cite information correctly using the MLA format, and create a properly formatted works cited.
Non-fiction book choices are the following: World Without Us by Alan Weisman, Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, and Population 485 by Michael Perry.
