English 11

 Course Overview:

English 12 is a two-semester course focusing on both literary and composition skills. This class will follow semster units . Each unit will contain literary work(s) as well as  a writing focus (expect writing assignments;. The titles or focus for each unit are the following:  "Self Reflction", "Literary Approaches", "In-Depth Study", "Research Project". Assessment for each unit will vary; some units may be assessed by a project, while others may be assessed by a writing assignment or performance assignment. For more specific information about each unit, please click on the unit title on the left side bar.

 Grading:

  • Methods of evaluation include the following: essays, paragraphs, discussions, quizzes, tests, exams, performances, projects, and speeches.
  • A grading sheet or rubric will be provided to students prior to all major assessments. Essay grade sheets will refernce the six-trait rubric (word choice, ideas and content, sentence fluency, conventions, voice, organization). Please note that presentation of the essay or written evaluation is important as well; therefore, students are expected to type essays and follow heading guidelines (hand-written essays will not be accepted).
  • All essays may be rewritten for an improved score, however, the first version must have been complete and show effort. Also students must include a self-reflection with the re-written work. Re-written work must be turned in during the same grading period.

 

Late Work :

  • The expectation for English 12 is that students are engaged and participating in class activites and discussion.
  • Students are expected to complete all assignments by the indicated due dates. Late work follows school policy.
  • All major projects and papers (unit assessments) due dates are given at least seven days in advance. The due date(s) for major assignments is typically over a span of three to five days. The assignment is due the last day (if the students is absents, please have someone drop off the assignment at school).
  • Students will not receive any points for late assignments (unless it is excused).
  • Summative assessments may be redone if the following conditions are met by the student: type  both a reflection paragraph about the changes and improvements made to the original assignment and a reasoing paragraph that reflects the purpose of your decision to redo the work.

  • notebook to be kept in class at tables
  • Highlighters and pens
