AP Language and Composition Quarter Three:

Classical Text and Free Response Essay

The focus of this unit will be reading comprehension of classical literature, close reading, and free response essay construction. Classical literature selection will be a selection from Shakespeare as well as other classical literary texts including the following works: Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, Hamlet by Shakespeare, The Inferno by Dante, The Illiad and The Odyssey by Homer, Antigone by Sophocles, as well as selected Greek mythology. Students will continue to practice AP multiple choice quizzes.

Formative Assessments for this unit include reading comprehension quizzes, vocabulary quizzes, close reading activities, connections activities, free response practice, multiple choice quizzes, and class presentations/acting/reading.

Summative Assessments for this unit include free response essay, act/scene presentation, passage translation and thematic art pairing presentation.

Unit Objective: Students will be able to read and comprehend classical literature. Students will be able to connect classical literary themes to a modern context. Students will be able to talk about specific author choices in classical literature and the purpose of the choice. Students will be able to identify, understand, respond to and construct a free response prompt.
