The Jeanne Richie Memorial Puddle Jump was started thirteen years ago by Longfellow’s staff wellness team.  The race was created to support Longfellow’s afterschool Jeanne Richie Learning Center (previously called CLC) and to provide wellness scholarships for students.  Originally the race was called the Longfellow Puddle Jump (so named by Longfellow Teacher and Wellness representative, Jeanne Richie).  Unfortunately, Jeanne passed away in 2010; the race was renamed in her honor in 2011.
Longfellow Elementary School will host its thirteen annual Jeanne Richie Memorial Puddle Jump, a 5K fun run/walk at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13th, beginning at Phoenix Park, Riverfront Terrace, Eau Claire WI. Registration forms and a course map can be downloaded from Longfellow’s website http://www.ecasd.us/Longfellow-Elementary/Home.
Participants may register the day of the race starting at 7:30 a.m.  The event begins this year with an un-timed children’s dash, the Duckling Dash.  The Duckling Dash begins at 9:00 a.m.  The 5k run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. (wheel chair division begins at 9:25 a.m.) The 5k timed race will follow a loop along the the Chippewa River trail from Phoenix Park to Boyd Park. Proceeds from the race will benefit Longfellow’s After-School Jeanne Richie Learning Center (JRLC) and student scholarships for community programs.
“This is our thirteenth year of hosting the race.  We have seen our numbers grow from 100 to over 1,600 participants.  We are thrilled and very thankful for the support the community gives to Longfellow and to our “not-for-profit” event,” said Holly Larson, Partnership Coordinator and Race Director.  “With the help of Eau Claire and surrounding communities, we have been able to provide student scholarships for community programs to many of our students (over $9,000 in 2018) in addition to helping to support our after-school JRLC program.”
