Assistive Technology

The Assistive Technology Team provides information and resources to staff and parents on universal design for learning. Universal design for learning focuses on making the curriculum accessible to all students.

What does the Assistive Technology Team Do?
Consultations: Assistive technology consultations are provided on-site upon request. These consultations are both student and program based, depending on the needs of staff and students. For a student-based consultation, the team meets to identify concerns and needs of the student, to identify current level of performance, and to look at the environmental issues relating to access/performance. The assistive technology team works with both staff and students to provide real solutions for identified problems. This may include on-site training, procurement of equipment and/or software, software programming, adaptation of existing equipment, etc. The assistive technology team will always look at no-tech solutions first, then low tech solutions, then mid-tech solutions, and finally high-tech solutions.

Assistive Tech Training – individual training, small group/team training opportunities, workshops presented on staff development days and at staff meetings are just a few of the ways the assistive tech team provides training for the Eau Claire schools. Equipment/Device solutions including – recommendation, modification, creation and procurement Creation of handouts and smart sheets as well as a resource library of research relating to assistive technology.

Wide Range of Interventions: The Eau Claire Assistive Technology Team members are strong advocates for student solutions that are effective and least restrictive. Therefore, a wide array of assistive technology resources are employed, including:  

Low tech – cardboard, velcro, name templates, pencil grips, picture exchange symbols, rubber stamps, writing paper 

Mid tech – simple voice output systems (BIGmacks, Voice-in-the-Box, Chatbox) Alpha Smart, labeler, Franklin speller 

High tech – writing software, high end augmentative communication devices, computer access solutions

To request an assistive technology consultation please complete the AT Request for Assistance form including the following information:

For student consultations please provide: Student name, age, school, primary program placement, related services provided, a description of need for the assistive technology consultation and what you would like to see happen as a result of the consultation.

For program consultation please provide: Teacher name(s), program, school, description of need for the assistive technology consultation and what you would like to see happen as a result of the consultation.
